GPRS Roaming Fees Will Drop Massively

GPRS roaming agreements between countries are often extremely expensive. This is especially true in Europe, and particularly noticeable between adjacent countries. Eg, the charge to send from Spain’s Movistar to the UK’s Orange is $17 per MB. Mobile messaging users can have nasty surprises when they receive their phone bills.

What’s to be done? Medium to large enterprises often negotiate explicit agreements between countries. Smaller firms are out of luck. The dreadful rates frequently deter international use.

Longer term, rates will plummet as some carriers spot an opportunity to get market share by dropping rates. But expect off-the-shelf international roaming data rates to be high for at least the next three years.
