Not More Than 50 Virtual Directories Have Been Sold

Not More Than 50 Virtual Directories Have Been Sold. Virtual directories present a single logical view of information that’s drawn, on-the-fly, from a series of underlying data sources. The idea seems attractive: The virtual directories present live data, not a view of synchronized data that might no longer be current.

Several vendors have offered such products for a few years. The main players are Radiant Logic, OctetString, MaXware, and Persistent Systems. However, very few have sold, and none of the vendors appears to be prospering through virtual directory sales. We estimate that a maximum of 50 licenses have been sold to end-user organizations.

If this is a real marketplace, then clearly it’s just the very early days … David Ferris
