A good search engine is imperative for productivity. Otherwise, it’s hard to find email in a voluminous message store.
Lotus Notes/Domino has had good search capabilities for many years. The last two years have seen decent search engines come to Outlook and Exchange. I’ve tried a number of them, such as Microsoft Lookout and Google Desktop .
My favorite is Yahoo Desktop. As with the other search tools, it covers both conventional files and Outlook .PST files. Features that stand out include:
- Results display as you type in search strings.
- You can refine search strings.
- There is a preview pane for documents.
- You can immediately act on found emails; e.g., reply to them.
