More Flexible Journaling in Exchange 2007

Journaling exists in current versions of Microsoft Exchange. In Exchange 2007, journaling is much more flexible.

Journaling — not to be confused with database logging — currently involves keeping a copy of all email sent and received by a mailbox store. In Exchange 2007, journaling can be configured per mailbox store (database), per distribution list, or per user. All messages can be journaled or just those sent internally or externally. Messages can be journaled based on message sender, recipient, or content.

Exchange journaling is used by third-party email archiving solutions to capture email for compliance. Be careful when enabling journaling. It increases server load up to 35% and may require dedicated server resources. Refer to this TechNet article for more information.

Exchange 2003 introduced the concept of envelope journaling. However, enabling this is an organisation wide setting.

For a large enterprise with diverse regulatory needs around email archiving, this can causes challenges. Org wide settings for the mode of journaling can conflict with differing needs across geographical boundaries.

I’d be interested to understand if envelope journaling can be enabled more selectively within an organisation within 2007 (i.e. truend on at a server/store level rather than an org wide setting). Do you have any information on this?

Yes, it seems that messages can be journaled based on message sender, recipient, or content.

Thanks Richi, although I think that’s possibly a different point.

Yes, Ex2007 provides more granularity over where journaling can be enabled (even down to a user level), however this is different from the mode of journaling.

In 2003, the mode for journaling is either Envelope or Message, and the mode is applied consistently across the org. 2003 does not support both modes running within a single Exchange organisation.

My question is whether you can turn on Envelope journaling for some servers in an Ex2007 org, whilst others in the same org run Message journaling.

How can the equivalent of journaling be achieved with GroupWise and Notes?
