Weblogs Enabling Inclusive Journalism

Increasing numbers of companies are using outward-facing blogs for PR/marketing and to demonstrate thought leadership. There is also more innovative use of weblogs by some media companies now. One example is often known as citizen journalism -- where media companies recruit those who are already reputed bloggers. For example, some media companies in India have announced citizen journalism awards to involve more people.

Some media outlets also encourage people to submit pictures or video of breaking news. For example, the BBC invites its readers, viewers, and listeners to submit breaking news stories via email, MMS, or 3G video.

This is great for both media companies and consumers -- both of them get depth and breadth in their coverage.
