What People Pay for MS Exchange

We recently surveyed 70+ Exchange users, asking them what they are paying Microsoft for Exchange, and how many mailboxes they have. We then worked out the cost per mailbox per year. The actual question is below. The results seem too high for us. For example:

  • Organizations with 1 to 99 employees are typically paying about $250/mailbox/year in license fees and/or maintenance.
  • Organizations with 1,000 to 10,000 employees are typically paying about $50/mailbox/year in license fees and/or maintenance.

Can anyone share their thoughts on what’s happening, and what organizations are really paying for Exchange? If you prefer anonymity, send email directly to david.ferris@ferris.com. I’ll make your post anonymous.

The question we asked was: In US$, what do you expect to spend on email software licenses, email software maintenance contracts, and email software updates annually? Do not include professional services fees; we are only interested in software product costs.
