Nick Mehta Joins LiveOffice

Nick Mehta, formerly boss of Symantec’s Enterprise Vault business, left Symantec about six months ago. After investigating the possibilities, he’s just joined LiveOffice as CEO. This is good for LiveOffice, and for Nick.

Summary of LiveOffice:

  • SaaS archiving and messaging solutions for SMBs or organizations with limited IT staff.
  • Historical focus is financial services and broker/dealers specifically; increasing growth in government, education, and healthcare.
  • Main services: email archiving, email discovery, email compliance, Exchange hosting.
  • Company is bootstrapped; it grew to $19 million in revenue in 2007, has 100 employees, and a track record of profitability and healthy growth.

    Nick,

I am interested to hear your thought about the competition from Exchange Online. How will you compete with Microsoft when the deliver the same online email services as LiveOffice and have no Exchange license costs?

    Regards,
    Bob.

Thanks for kind words, David. It’s an exciting opportunity and I’m lucky to have been invited to join the company.

Bob – you obviously ask a good question. I don’t think there is any easy answer to the “how do you coexist with Microsoft” query. However, I can tell you that when I took the job with Enterprise Vault at VERITAS in 2004, everyone told us that Microsoft Exchange will have archiving built-in and that the archiving market will go away very quickly. 🙂

My general feeling is that if you do a good job finding out where Microsoft focuses and look to extend around it and help customers, there is always opportunity. Yes, that’s a vague answer but unfortunately there is no simple formula here. I do believe that customers with needs for data retention, discovery and other value-added services on top of Exchange will continue to look to third party vendors for help in their Microsoft environment.

But we shall see. Regardless, I love this space, so I know it will be fun!
