Alternative File Transfer/Synchronization Tools

Recently, we published a bulletin about Thru, a file transfer/synchronization product. As well as the paid products mentioned in the bulletin, there’s a whole range of free software and services that perform some or all of these roles.

One of our current favorites is FolderShare — originally created by a company called ByteTaxi, which Microsoft acquired in 2005. FolderShare — or to give its new full name, Windows Live FolderShare — is a peer-to-peer service running on Windows and Mac OS.

It’s fair to say that FolderShare went through a painful phase of unreliability under Microsoft’s ownership, but seems to have settled down since.

Of course, one of the core Microsoft future strategies is known as Live Mesh. The FolderShare technology will be a core part of this.
