Email Security Market Will Top $3.7 Billion in 2005

October 17, 2005 San Francisco, Calif. – The market for email security will grow to $5.5 billion by 2010, up from $3.7 billion this year, according to a new report by Ferris Research, a San Francisco-based market research and consulting firm.

The report, The Email Security Market, 2005-2010, finds that email security revenues are increasing by almost 25% a year. However, this high rate of growth will not continue past 2007, as revenues will level off. The report also finds that:

  • The overall market for email security products and services in 2005 will consist of 450 million users. Business users, who currently number 170 million, will account for more than half of this amount ($2 billion).
  • The consumer market for email security products in 2005 will be $1.8 billion, rising to more than $2.75 billion by 2010.
  • Customers are increasingly seeking a single-vendor solution for their email security needs. This contrasts starkly with the best-of-breed approach prevalent 12 to 24 months ago.

“Email security used to mean encryption, but the nature of email security has changed dramatically in the last two years as the range and types of threats facing users has expanded,” says Ferris Research president David Ferris. “And while old email security technologies were in some sense optional, the new email security technologies needed to protect users not just from eavesdroppers, but from phishers, spammers, and others, are requirements for both business and consumer users.”

The new report also finds that the market for email security appliances is growing faster than the market for software and hosted service providers. However, this growth rate will slow to match overall market growth in 12 to 24 months. By 2007, however, most customers who are switching to appliances will have done so, and this segment will stabilize at about one-quarter of the market, growing at the same rate as software and hosted service providers.

The report also covers the growing economic opportunity for email security vendors, and the end user requirements that must be met for vendors to close sales.
