Microsoft’s Sample Applications for Windows SharePoint Services–Excellent Education Tool

On August 3, Microsoft released a set of 30 free sample applications for Windows SharePoint Services. These applications are designed to be used either “out of the box” or as templates for customized solutions.  They address a range of common business scenarios including managing HR information, supporting sales teams and facilitating team collaboration.  The applications can be downloaded here: https://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sppt/wssapps/default.mspx.

These applications are reminiscent of the “Nifty 50” templates developed by Lotus some years ago to help spur adoption of Lotus Notes.  This is an excellent strategy to help customers and partners understand the capabilities of a new platform like SharePoint and to rapidly gain business value from the technology.  A very smart move on Microsoft’s part that should increase the adoption of SharePoint as a collaboration and information sharing tool.
