It's very early days for digital rights management (DRM). The technology addresses important needs, but it hasn't taken off.
The main problems appear to be:
- People don't like to install special client software.
- DRM needs to be seamlessly built into many applications, rather than an after-the-fact add-on.
- DRM needs to be integrated with identity management and policy management.
Document management and electronic content management vendors are now thinking about adding DRM features. They could well be a major stimulus for DRM.
