Overcoming Barriers to Digital Rights Management

It's very early days for digital rights management (DRM). The technology addresses important needs, but it hasn't taken off.

The main problems appear to be:

  • People don't like to install special client software.
  • DRM needs to be seamlessly built into many applications, rather than an after-the-fact add-on.
  • DRM needs to be integrated with identity management and policy management.

Document management and electronic content management vendors are now thinking about adding DRM features. They could well be a major stimulus for DRM.
