Yahoo Go Mobile — Nice Model, but not Ready for Use

Yahoo's new mobile email service looks to provide a service that will be useful for Yahoo users. By developing a custom contact/email/IM/photo application, it can be nicely tuned to the small form factor device (which is a problem for Google's Web application). This will be a neat solution for some users, but has its downsides:

  • It only works for Yahoo. If you want to use other providers' email accounts, it won't help you.
  • Synchronizing photos will need quite a bit of data to be sent, so you need to be sure of sufficient (cheap) bandwidth.
  • It only works on selected phones (currently Nokia 60 series only).

Despite these points, the model looks good. A colleague and I both tried it, but were not able to use it to access email (we each had different problems). The current release is clearly too difficult for the average user to handle.

This new service is great and you can synchronize other email accounts (AOL, MSN, etc) within yahoo go mobile. it will be on over 100 handsets by the end of 2006. This product will elevate yahoo to the top of its division.
