Consumer Market Becoming a Center of Innovation

A visit to last week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) suggests that the center of innovation in communication technology is shifting. The business technology market is overwhelemed with concerns about security, liability, and risk management. These concerns have a chilling effect on the introduction of new capabilities. Major vendors in hardware and software are turning their attention to the consumer market, which has few (if any) such concerns.

For the next few years expect new capabilities in mobile messaging, VoIP, etc. to emerge first in the consumer space. They will then find their way into businesses through the "back door" where IT departments will scramble to secure and manage them. This has happened in the past -- PDAs and instant messaging are just two examples.
