Archiving of Images: Iron Mountain Service

Iron Mountain and HP announced they will offer a hosted service specializing in the archiving and disaster recovery of digital images. "Digital Record Center for Medical Images" is aimed at hospitals.

It won't be long until mainstream organizations make heavy use of images and video. As that happens, archiving systems will have to handle an even greater volume of information. The volume of archived material is already a major challenge for vendors. Data, data everywhere -- we're drowning in it.

Unlike email and many other digital documents, the ability to interpret content is very limited with images. Search and e-discovery will have to focus on metadata. The difficulty in interpreting image content will fuel much vendor investment and innovation.
