Tolerance for Email Unreliability?

From time to time, email systems are down. We all depend on email, and most people more so than the telephone.

Large organizations can invest in redundant systems and special features to enhance reliability, but most organizations put up with periodic outages. They're much more tolerant of email outages than telephone outages. This seems strange, even allowing that the notion of "send now, deliver later" is central to email.

A number of solutions await in the wings, hoping the public will get more demanding. One that comes to mind is Teneros, which has put a lot of money into products that provide high availability for Microsoft Exchange. Another is Neverfail.
