Definition of a Prosumer

Recently, the concept of a "prosumer"--a professional consumer--has emerged in the world of mobile phones.

Prosumers fall into two categories:

  • A person who works in a larger enterprise, but doesn't have a BlackBerry or other high-end smartphone that's integrated with the internal IT system. The employee does, however, own his or her own mobile phone, and would like to use it for business purposes. Most corporate employees fall into this BlackBerry-less category.
  • A self-employed businessperson, probably working from home. This person has some hosted IT services, such as Hotmail, Gmail, or a hosted MS Exchange account.

With thanks to Synchronica's Carsten Brinkschulte for the crisp explanation.
