Symantec To Acquire LiveOffice?

We hear strong rumors to the effect that Symantec is about to acquire LiveOffice. We believe them to be reliable.

This wouldn't be surprising:

  • Symantec is building its cloud-based offering
  • It has a strong on-premises archiving product (Enterprise Vault)
  • LiveOffice provides a strong cloud-based archiving offering
  • Nick Mehta, CEO, was in charge of Symantec's Enterprise Vault business until 2007

On the downside, the LiveOffice archiving capability is very different from that of Enterprise Vault. Only limited integration between the two would seem practical.

Is this for real? What kind of rumors could be spreading that could be this huge of an announcement?

Symantec acquired MessageLabs in 2008 which offers a SaaS archiving offering (non-Enterprise Vault). It’d be interest to see how such an acquisition would play with the offering provided by the current MessageLabs/Symantec service.

Symantec have long since been offering LiveOffice as an archiving add-on to it’s SHS (MessageLabs) offering.

Symantec has not long since been offering LiveOffice as an archiving add-on to MessageLabs, that relationship is new as of the Q2 2010. MessageLabs, Microsoft, MessageOne and more have long since been using Proofpoint (via their Fortiva acquisition) under the covers – plenty of press on these “strategic relationships”
Symantec buying LiveOffice would be a pure political play to buy more customers and bring Nick back into the Symantec fold. They would have to give him something to grow to keep him. He has one of the most ambitions entrepreneurial spirits I have ever seen.
