We were lucky that we could develop a personal relationship with many of our clients. This was extremely valuable, because it helped us learn about user adoption issues and strategies, and what was working well vs. what was failing. It's hard to reason a priori about deployment issues. So much of our research was done by talking to IT staff responsible for deploying email, and then generalizing from what we learned.
In many cases it was also distinctly pleasurable to get to know our clients.
